Ion Exchange Softener




The softening of domestic fresh cold water is a real talking point, and there are many appliances out on the market that say they can achieve this successfully. One proven way is called the Ion Exchange system. It accomplishes this by using something called an Ion Exchange resin. This resin is made up of minature polymeric beads that are specifically formulated to hold a charge from particular ions (an ion is a molecule or atom). Limescale and scum is formed from amounts of magnesium and calcium present in hard water. These are said to be ions so, as water flows through the resin, these calcium and magnesium ions change places with the sodium ions that are already on the resin. A Waterloo Plumber is trained to work on all types of water treatment appliances. The Sodium salts, unlike the calcium and magnesium, are really very soluble so sodium will not scale or scum. Once every sodium ion has been replaced by calcium or magnesium, this resin needs be regenerated or recharged again with sodium ions. This is accomplished by flushing the resin with a solution of salt. (or brine). This is why the Ion Exchange is known as a water softener. The level of sodium in the water is not suitable for drinking. So, a separate non-softened drinking water supply must be drawn off before the softener unit. Washing machines and hot water cylinders do not suffer from lime scale deposits with this system. The overall reduction in the lime scale makes sure that taps, baths and showers, will stay cleaner longer. Waterloo Plumbers can supply and fit all appliances. Before a purchase a water supply test must be done to find out if the water pressure is suitable. Too high pressure and you will need a reducing valve. Any softener should be installed close to the rising main to reduce pipework. There is a requirement for a power supply to feed the unit transformer. Finally there is a need for a standpipe similar to a washing machines or drain for the waste pipe.
